Faculty Spotlight

Gemma L Carvill

Assistant Professor of Neurology (Epilepsy/Clinical Neurophysiology), Pediatrics and Pharmacology

The primary aim of our research is to identify the genetic factors and biological mechanisms that cause epilepsy. We use a variety of sequencing technologies to identify new genetic causes in both the DNA regions that code for proteins (genes) and those that control the expression of these genes (regulatory regions). The second mission of our lab is to capitalize on the advances in gene discovery in epilepsy to create neuronal models of this disorder. Many of these 'epilepsy' genes are involved in the control of expression of other genes. In other words, they are responsible for switching cert...

Valeria C Cohran

Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition)

My primary interest is intestinal failure and transplantation. Children with intestinal failure are living longer with transplant free survival given advances in intestinal rehabilitation. My center has participated in the pediatric short bowel syndrome trials using teduglutide.  This trial was instrumental in allowing teduglutide to be FDA approved in children. There are patients who are unable to be tapered from TPN and will undergo intestinal transplantation. This is also a fragile population that require special expertise with regard to the nutrition and immunosuppression.

Theresa A Laguna

Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine)

I received my MD from UCSF. I completed my Pediatric Residency and Chief Residency at the University of Washington, Seattle. I completed my Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship at the University of Colorado and received a Master's Degree in Clinical Science. After spending 10 years at the University of Minnesota, I moved to Chicago to join Lurie Children's to become Division Head. I am passionate about equity, diversity and inclusion.

Estella M Alonso

Professor of Pediatrics (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition) and Medical Social Sciences

My primary research interest is in health outcomes following pediatric liver transplantation and acute liver failure. I lead a research group that studies all aspects of outcomes from survival to health related quality of life (HRQOL). Our research group has extensive experience examining HRQOL and cognitive outcomes in pediatric liver transplant survivors, long term complications related to immunosuppressive medications and the causes and treatment of acute liver failure. Our group has also actively involved in new trials of immunosuppression withdrawal in liver transplant recipients. I am...

Jacqueline B Corboy

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine)

My primary effort is in quality improvement and its ability to transform care within our division, the hospital, the medical school and our among our community partnerships. Education and exposure to quality improvement initiatives at the medical student leve will enable future physicians to provide care which is safe, equitable, efficient, effective, timely and patient-centered. Through implimentation of initiatives across both academic and community sites, care can be optimized and coordinated, ensuring evidence-based practice regardless of where their care is obtained. As Co-Director of Qua...
